John and Martha Spear purchased the old Torrance Homestead in Upper Jay, NY in 2003, and shortly thereafter added an organic vegetable and herb garden, pigs and chickens. Their's is a familiar narrative: city people (they lived in New York City) moved to the country, start a farm and a new new life. They raised pigs for their own table for a few years before expanding and

Both John and Martha work full time off farm. Martha is the director of development at North Country School and Camp Treetops (NCS/CTT) and John is a teacher and administrator at National Sports Academy. Both schools are in nearby Lake Placid.


Being active in the community is important to the Spears. John is a member of the Upper Jay Fire Department, where he serves as its treasurer. Martha is the secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay, where she helps lead the Writers Group. 
Martha is also a member of the Fire Department Auxiliary. Both John and Martha enjoy volunteering for the Jay Entertainment and Music Society (JEMS), and they are active in their church, Keene Valley Congregational Church.
